There is very little call for commercial divers these days. Let's face it, sitting on the bottom of the North Sea welding pipelines is probably better left to machines. However, according to the Professional Association of Diving Instructors (PADI) there are more jobs in the recreational industry that there are professionals looking to fill them.

Recreational Diving

This covers Rescue Divers, Divemasters and Instructors, all of whom can work professionally in the UK. With the world seemingly getting smaller, the demand for exotic holiday locations is increasing and so is the Dive Industry. The opportunities for those looking to work abroad as Dive Guides or Instructors have never been better. A foreign language will be a great benefit as will boat handling, equipment repair and servicing and retail experience.

Research Divers

A lot of this work is usually voluntary, but someone has to organise it. An appreciation of conservation, coral, fish identification and leadership skills are a general requirement. At Divenut we promote conservation presentations on a voluntary basis. Keep an eye out in the Scuba magazines for opportunities.

Emergency Services

Police Divers and those working for the Emergency Services all had to start somewhere as do Navy Divers. Perhaps not as glamorous as teaching off a beach in the Caribbean, but can be equally satisfying for those not set on a nine to five job. A Diving Qualification in leadership would be a great asset.

Travel and Leisure Industry

Specialist Travel Companies, holiday companies, leisure pools all come in to contact with Scuba Divers at sometime or other. Even a basic knowlege of Scuba will be of great benefit.
