Sharks have been around for 420 million years if you include the broader definition of shark of which includes extinct subclasses.

There some 470 species of shark ranging from the dwarf Lanternshark only 17cm in length to the whale shark the largest fish in the world, reaching approximately 12 metres in length.

Sharks are found in all seas and common to depths of up to 2000 metres.

Sharks do not normally live in freshwater however there are two exceptions the bull shark and river shark, surviving in both seawater and freshwater.
